fundraising idea - donations in lieu

‘Donations in lieu' are pretty much exactly that: a way of asking people to donate the amount they would normally spend on somethingelse, usually a luxury or gift.

What you need:
Not much. Maybe the odd poster or two (check out our template poster) and a collecting tin but you can do without if needs be.

How to do it:
Publicise your donations in lieu in advance so people know not to buy what it is you are asking for donations to replace. Suggest a donation amount in advance. If required you can pop up a poster with lots of white space where people can write a message instead. Either put a collecting tin next to your poster or go round on a specified day and collect the money.

How much to expect:
£100 to £1,000 depending on the number of people taking part and how much you suggest people donate.

Works well for:
Offices, schools, individuals who have a special occasion coming up or with family and friends. For groups it’s best timed to a ‘giving’ time of year such as Christmas.

Top tip:
Ideas for things donations could replace include greeting or Christmas cards, secret Santa presents, birthday presents, treats or ‘tuck’, Easter eggs.

And the big thank you goes to: Donna from Birmingham.
